My Near Death Experience on a train trestle…well, maybe that is a little dramatic. To be fair, at the time I had no idea how things were going to turn out.
Have you ever had one of those moments where you see, hear or smell something that immediately brings you back in time?
I was walking this week from Oceanside Harbor, over to the pier when I was startled to hear a train’s whistle in the distance. It took me back many years, literally stopping me in my tracks as I walked.
You see, once upon a time I lived by myself near this very spot, over by the the pier. I lived in a tiny little house back in the day when it felt like a fairly dangerous place for a girl to be living on her own. I would ride my bike down to the harbor every chance I got, which was tricky because you had to make your way across the train trestle to get over to the harbor, but it was something I did often.
On one particular day, like numerous times before, I waited and listened at the beginning of the trestle before entering. Surely I would be able to tell if a train was approaching. Turns out this is not a true statement, I had just been lucky all those other times. Unbeknownst to me, the Amtrak of the time made very little sound upon it’s approach. …
