The last excerpt from my husband’s adventure 1000 miles into Mexico, from San Diego to Los Barilles.
We left Ciudad Insurgentes, turned north, traveling through farmland near town and scrub-ranch land as you go further out. We are headed to San Juanico, known to surfers as Scorpion Bay.
There are many spots where the road is being raised and rebuilt, forcing you to get off and drive in the ditch for stretches of road. You will also find bridges washed out and have to drive through the water to continue. There literally is no easy way to get to Scorpion Bay.
We finally reach the little town of San Juanico and immediately check the surf. Surf is small when we arrive and you can see that there has been a lot of sand washed off the points, exposing rock. The points here are a perfect right hand setup, point after point, five of them, anyone you choose is going to be awesome. There are times when the sand fills in perfectly along the points, allowing people to ride from the outside, all the way in to the boat area in the back of the bay. That makes for a 1-1.5 mile ride…incredible. Didn’t really believe until I confirmed with other local folks that had seen it.
