I don’t think I ever had a January hustle before, but a new year, calls for new strategies! Here is how it all started.
One of the things I was desperately missing before I quit my job last year was the ability to sit down and read a good book. Even after I quit, I just wasn’t finding the opportunity to squeeze in a little book time here and there.
An awesome lady I met this year, Jasmine Watts, editor of Miss Millennia Magazine (along with all her talented sisters) wrote an article about how Audible.com made her more successful. I was intrigued by her story and decided to give it a go. Now, I have only had it for six weeks and I have to tell you, I have read/listened to six books in the last six weeks! Win for me! Or at least a very good start to making book time a priority.
They have a 30 day free trial, where you get two audio books free to see if it is something that works for you if you want to check it out.. (#ad) Audible Free Trial [Digital Membership].
There was one book that I ordered that was a dark but humorous look at someone dealing with some really tough issues. I have to admit…while the subject matter was interesting, the author of this book narrating it totally ruined it for me! I tried to look past it, but there was something about her voice. I couldn’t bring myself to listen to her anymore! Audible has an option to return an audio book you don’t like. “Didn’t like narrator” was actually a return reason! They credited my account immediately. I thought that was pretty great customer service.
So, back to my January Hustle. One of the six books I read was Jon Acuff’s, (#ad) Do Over. The book is totally apropos for the place I am in currently. Honestly, who wouldn’t like a do over every now and again?! But this turnaround thing for me, is all about intentionally doing over.
I loved the concepts he presented and sought him out online after reading it. Good timing for me, as he was about to launch a program he calls 30 Days of Hustle in January. I immediately signed up. On his site he points out, “Most people don’t hustle. Don’t be most people in 2016.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be most people.
There is also an online community associated with Acuff’s program to help support all the hustlers. The interesting thing about choosing your hustle…it can be something as small as decluttering a closet or as big as launching a new business. The goals posted on the online community are so varied and inspiring to read about.
One other book of note on my Audible list, along the same lines, is (#ad)Hal Elrod’s The Morning Miracle: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM). So, as an absolute non morning person, why would I be interested in a wacky idea like this? Well, to be honest, having freedom over your schedule can be both a blessing and a curse. If you aren’t careful with your time, you might find yourself looking up at the clock and finding that it’s damn near noon and you’re still in your pajamas! After being starved for down time for so long, unless you take control of your schedule and maintain some semblance of discipline, you can be in danger of squandering your new found, very valuable time. I don’t necessarily want to work 14 hour days again, but I sure as heck don’t want to waste my days away either.
So, all because of my chance Audible subscription, in addition to my January hustle, I am up at 5AM, working on Elrod’s Morning Miracle, applying his S.A.V.E.R.S technique to help catapult my day into an amazingly productive one. It’s only been a few days of getting up early, chasing my January hustle and I haven’t hurt anyone yet…maybe that’s the miracle right there! Can’t wait to see where this focused effort gets me.
