Ever wake up with an overwhelming thought…an idea that has rolled around in your brain, intertwined in your dreams all night long? Sometimes it’s hopeful, sometimes fraught with worry depending on what is going on in your world. Last night’s overwhelming, must-be-heard-now message in my mind…don’t be a dick. There it is, simple as that.
The thought may have been precipitated by the onslaught of this political news cycle we find ourselves in…24/7 vitriol, so much anger and craziness. Regardless of how much change we might wish for, nothing positive and long lasting gets done unless someone stops being a dick, doesn’t matter whose side you are on.
Not only has the political news been ridiculous and seemingly never ending, but people’s reactions to the opinions of others on this topic have been out of control. Why do people insist on schooling others as to why their opinion is so wrong, especially publicly on social media? It’s their opinion. Leave it alone. Or take it into consideration…try to put yourself in their shoes to understand why they might feel the way they do. Ask questions. You might learn something, maybe not, in which case, you can still just leave it alone, scroll on. No need to be a dick about it.
Sharing opinions, lively debate, mutual consideration, regardless of subject matter – these ideas are core to who I am. I also feel a bit like Gladys Hardy from the Ellen Show…I love Jesus but I drink a little…and I might use language that makes my husband and kids blush every now and again. But I also walk in kindness, with an open heart and mind, anxious to learn my next lesson in life.
I get that these are different traits than a lot of folks have but I don’t hold it against them. I embrace them still. And one thing’s for sure…I won’t be a dick about it.
